Off-centre

I still have a back log of projects from my summer to record.

I have spent the last few years working on various bikini patterns, and now that they are all working for me, it is time to move onto one-piece designs.

The fabric for this swimsuit was a Christmas present.  Even though I loved it, it sat in my stash for a few years, because I could not figure out how to use it so that I didn't end up with either a pineapple flowering from my fanny or flames on my breasts.  Eventually, I got my light-bulb moment when it occurred to me that I don't have to centre prints down my middle.  This is a concept that I have always struggled with.  I remember being amazed the first time I saw someone slice the top off a passion-fruit...I always cut them in the middle and have the seeds and juice spill out.  Off-centre is okay.

I like how this swimsuit looks on my, and I like the racer back, but the low V at the front did not work well for body surfing (the days I forgot my rashie).  Perhaps less of the ocean would have rushed down my front if I had more negative ease?

My sewing machine did not want to attach the straps, so you can see a bit of a bird's nest there.

I did sort out a few fitting issues with this suit though.  My previous one-pieces have all felt too short in the body.  I lengthened this one, and narrowed the crotch, so I think I am good to go for fancier styles now.

Ha ha I'm with Judith and the laugh! I love the racer back with the fancy front. It looks like a great pattern. I love seeing all your creations... you make me sane when I am doing my assignments! Thanks.

This is really groovy, Katherine! A nice pool-side suit. I love the racer back. I have trouble with prints and underwear, too. I keep looking for smaller prints because the big ones always put something awkward right where I don't want it :/. Maybe I should go off center!

A little bit of asymmetry is sometime a very good thing, even if it's difficult to come to grips with!! I love the pattern placement here - it's not something you'd even focus on when just glancing by, which I suppose it exactly what you want!

Your pattern placement is masterly. This is a very nice looking pattern, practical but fun as well.

Ah yes, pattern placement! I once managed to get a frilly bit of pink paisley to flower out of a doll's fanny, luckily I could just make a skirt and everything was proper again! Flames on boobs sounds kind of groovy though! Love the bathing suit, must be SO nice not to have to deal with changing rooms and unflattering lights when getting a new one.

The cossie is great! But the passionfruit idea! Of course!!! Just cut the top off! I always do just what you do, cut it across the middle then try to scoop everything back in. Great idea:)

Nice you figured out the fit details in a one piece. Love the fabric!

I love this fabric. I think it looks great off center. It is so hard for me to find high quality swimwear fabric in current colors/prints. Lucky you to have friends/relatives? that give you fabric as a Christmas present.

Ah, excellent point about asymmetry! Will have to remember that one. Great looking suit! The fabric is really pretty and I might even say is enhanced by NOT being centered.

This is a gorgeous suit. The fabric really makes it. A clothing company I liked was the first one to make me notice a bold print like this off-centre, and I really like it. I've never forgotten your awesome B&W suit, by the way.

You can cut the top off a passionfruit instead of in half with seeds and juice spilling out???
