Last summer...

I have quite a few unblogged projects from throughout the year.  I'm going to try and do some quick catch-ups, because this blog is my main record-keeping for my sewing and I like to have a record.

This peplum top is self-drafted.  I made it when lots of other people were making Vogue 8815.  I like peplum tops, but I thought the proportions of the Vogue pattern were a little bit off, and I wanted one with more cut-away armholes.  I went with princess seams, rather than darts.

I don't have a good block for self-drafted tops.  I have drafted several different blocks by different methods, including Aldrich, Bunka and the European Cut.  None of them is perfect and I sort of fudged all 3 together for this.  I still need to sort out a basic block.

This top sits better with other clothes.  It is quite fitted in the waist, and the skirt is high-waisted, so I think the skirt is stopping the top from sitting correctly in these photos.  I guess I need to either add more ease to the waist or wear it with clothes that sit just below the waist.

I scrounged the fabric from one of my sisters, which was left-over after I helped her make a dress.  Fair trade, I thought, fabric for labour.  I love the colour and it has an interesting texture as well.

Katherine, your top is beautiful. I am one of the few that also thought the Vogue pattern proportions are off. The waist sits way too high and makes it unflattering. Your top is really a lovely exercise in proportion - the peplum is also a perfect depth and that colour and the princess seams makes your top incredibly flattering.

I agree, the Vogue pattern is a little short-waisted for most people. Yours has great proportions, though, and shows how nice a peplum can look!

Your top is very pretty. I like the armhole shape and the understated peplum. I actually like the short waisted side of the Vogue pattern. It is far more flattering on my shape than a sit on the waist version.

Gorgeous! (and I'm not just talking about the spunk in the black skinny jeans!) That fabric really is so lovely. I'm yet to see Emily's dress. Certainly a great trade.

Gorgeous, I think the cut away sleeves suit the summery style really well.

I think you nailed the peplum proportions and the details - princess seams and armscye shape - work really well. That's a great start to a basic block!

Love it - amazing colour, and you've achieved a beautiful shape with this. The vogue peplum top had a very high waist - it was even a little high on me, and I'm very short above the waist!
PS it looks so lush and tropical in the background - wow
