A Walking Christmas Tree

My sewing this year has been a little intense...drafting patterns, perfecting fit, meticulous construction. As an antidote, this dress was a just a fun throw-together thing, using fabrics that I wasn't quite sure what else to do with. The top fabric is a cotton voile, the middle is left-over from my Enchanted dress and the bottom is an Anna Sui cotton-silk blend in a colour that didn't work near my face. Actually, the man about my house, who assures me that he was very good at Art, chose the bottom fabric over another blue/green one that I had chosen.

My inspiration was a Dries Van Noten dress, shown in the following photograph from October Vogue Australia. My middle fabric is a little stiff, so I could not make such a full style.

I generated the basic pattern in Wild Ginger. It is a flared sheath with French darts. I used 8cm ease in the bust so that I could gather the top edge with 25 mm wide elastic...no zips or buttons required. The bottom layer is gathered on. The top frill is just a rectangle.
