Finally, a shorts pattern that I love. As much as I love trying different patterns, I wish I'd found this one years ago, as it is exactly the kind of shorts that I like to wear.
I bought myself a Patrones subscription. It took me while to dive in and make the commitment to a subscription, and whilst I was thinking it over, I bought some of their "best of"editions to try out a few patterns. This pattern is from Patrones Extra No. 17 Costura Facil.
I added a couple of centimetres to the length.
I made a muslin first and took in the CB seam at the waist some. There was not much shaping in the vertical seam that runs down the middle of the butt cheek and back leg, which seemed like a wasted opportunity to me :), so I added some curvature there. The fit at the back is not perfect, but I have given up trying to achieve pants perfection.
It is hard to see in these next 2 photos, but the front pocket does not extend all the way to the side seam. It is top-stitched in place. The split at the bottom of the leg is a couple of centimetres forward from the side seam. I thought that this was a really unique pattern feature, but as I was halfway through sewing these, Audrey posted her rather glam colour blocked pants, which were sewn using a similar burdastyle pattern from one of their back issues.
I love the wide waistband. I think I sewed mine with the buttons on the opposite side to the model in the magazine, but no matter. It looks like I should interface the fly area next time. The rise is just the height I like it.
The fabric is a stretch woven. I don't like the way stretch woven clothing expands through the day, so I sewed these with the stretch going vertically. I didn't know if this would make them bag out over my behind after wearing, but I have had these on for a few hours before photographing and they seem okay.
The green is not sitting in my wardrobe as easily as I had hoped...all I have matched it up with so far is 2 different black and white striped tops. Luckily, B&W stripes with bright green is one of my favourite looks at the moment.
All up, I'm feeling a lot of love for this pattern.
These are seriously cute! I love the shape and color.
ReplyDeleteLove these shorts. Really great color.
ReplyDeleteThese look perfect on you! The waistband tan Loyola especially nicely done.
ReplyDeleteLove the forward slit and the wide waistband. I've never tried out a Patrones pattern but I'm really curious. I always see such nice things. These are great!
ReplyDeleteThese are great! Cute shape and a snappy fabric. Perfect for warm weather.
ReplyDeleteI really like this pattern and they look great on you. The fit looks perfect. The slightly forward slits are very cool.
ReplyDeleteGreat shorts - I love the colour and the style. The waistband finish is fab.
ReplyDeleteLove them. The colour is awesome and I think you made a good choice with cutting the stretch going lengthwise. I have done this and they don't bag out.
ReplyDeleteWhat great shorts! I love the fit, style and all the little details. Perfect! Nice job.
ReplyDeleteI'd never thought to put the stretch going lengthwise - great idea. I think your shorts look great, love the colour and the little side splits.

ReplyDeleteYour shorts are hot and they fit beautifully! Thanks for showing a Patrones pattern, not many people are sewing with them and I'm always interested.
ReplyDeleteThese look like great shorts - love the non-fussy lines, and the fit looks pretty good to me! I find it very interesting too that you sewed these with the stretch the other way around - if you can rotate the stretch, that means more options!
ReplyDeleteYears ago (pre-sewing) I had some cigarette pants made for me in Vietnam. I chose the fabric - a stretch - and provided the garment to copy, but was very disappointed when I realised the pants had been sewn with the stretch the wrong way around. I assumed it was a mistake but perhaps they thought the fit was better this way around!
I love that waistband. That is such a great feature, I think you need some shorter tops ;) (I am guessing that tucked in is just way too hot where you are?)> The shorts fit really well and are an awesome colour.
ReplyDeleteI'm way past the age of shorts, but I love that colour!! You've done a great job.
ReplyDeleteFabulous! I've got a few Patrones magazines and I love them all - I'll have to obtain this one :) Great shorts - Love the fit and the waistband :)
ReplyDeleteGenius on the vertical stretch! These are a great shorts pattern. I love the big ole tabbed waistband. You don't see them much in patterns or trousers these days but I love how they fit.
ReplyDeleteLove the shorts - they look great on you and I think that you might be surprised with what will go with them. Pick out a shirt and actually wear it around for a while. Green is almost a black in my book.
ReplyDeleteI haven't been tempted by a Patrones yet after having too many Burdas unused, but I do like your shorts. Like you I'm always on the search for a good shorts pattern, and I love the wide waistband with the buttons on the side. Don't want to weird you out, but I have to say you have great legs to wear shorts
ReplyDeleteOh those are FAB! I can totally see why you wish you'd found that pattern yonks ago! It would look ace in so many different fabrics and colours xx
ReplyDeleteThis is lovely, something yellow or white (or a plain white shirt/blouse) would go well with these. I made up a pair of Patrones shorts recently and I'm loving them (too bad it's too cold now to wear them XD).
