Chilli Red

Summer sewing.  Summer is my favourite season.  I guess that many of you think that I sew summer wear pretty much all year round.  Winter sewing for me is a long sleeved t-shirt, or any fabric with spandex.  Well guess what?  I am on the move again.  To somewhere hotter.  More humid.  Significantly closer to the equator.  Where, according to the promotional DVD, there is no need for high fashion.

I thought that I'd sew something in preparation anyway (sewing helps me ignore my anxieties, and anxieties have been running pretty high around here lately).  A slip dress.  It is too skimpy for me for daily wear, but will be good to throw on over swimmers to walk to the town pool. Which is accessible 20 hours per day, once you have purchased a key.

It was a quick project.  I cut around my favourite Elle Macpherson slip.  Side seams on the overlocker.  Binding and straps on the coverstitch machine.  A lettuce hem to finish off.  Everything eighties is back again, isn't it?  I first learnt to do a  lettuce hem in the eighties, and it is entirely possibly that this is my first one since.

The place I am moving too is pretty isolated and it could take up to a month for all my stuff to get there.  So I am signing off for now, as I don't have a fancy phone, or a laptop, and will be without a computer for a while.  Not to mention without a sewing machine.  I am not sure how I will go without sewing for a month.  I have thought about digging out the socks I started to knit 2 years ago.  I am not much of a knitter.  I also have absolutely no need for knitted socks.

  1. Katherine good luck on your trip to Gove! What a long way! (I bet that makes you feel better!)and definitely no need for socks. The slip dress looks great. One of the latest BUrda's had crochet bikini's.. when did they come back? More use for those with a 20 hr a day pool option!

  7. Good luck! Gove looks beautiful and HOT - and getting a key to the local pool sounds wonderful!

I hope your move goes smoothly for all the family and that there are only pleasant surprises ahead. Although I would be feeling anxious about any big move too, I think it will be a great adventure for your kids and I hope there's lots to look forward to for you too.

Anyway I look forward to reading all about it in a month's time - some non-sewing posts sound like a necessity!

  14. It'd be lovely to meet up for coffee:-) Let me know when you're heading this way. And if your sewing machine hasn't arrived by then, you borrow my sewing corner for a bit. I totally understand the need for sewing!

That dress looks absolutely perfect for the Top End. So does the sound of getting hold of the key to the pool.

Hey, you're up here just in time for mango season. Mmmm!

  15. I've been thinking about you today and your move ;). I hope that things go smoothly all the way from here to there. I love that you post about summer clothes so much. I really wish I could spend more time sewing winter clothing but in my climate it's also so impractical. Take care and look forward to hearing from you on the other side!

  16. I hope things go smoothly for you with the move. Hand embroidery on one of your beautiful slips maybe? No sewing for a month sounds a bit difficult.
